About 22 years ago, my sleep schedule was in complete disarray.
I was in the habit of staying up late and waking up late, especially on weekends. It was a familiar pattern, much like what we see today.
I went through the “Sleep Management Framework” and learned the following:
- What should an ideal sleep routine look like?
- What are the ideal times for sleeping and waking up?
- What’s the difference between sleep quality and quantity, and how do they correlate?
- How much sleep does each person need?
- Most importantly, everyone’s optimal sleep requirement is different.
In my last 22 years of experience, I’ve observed that 98% of people are unaware of their optimum sleep time.
Due to this unawareness, most individuals face one of two situations:
👉 They are either excessive sleeping.
👉 Or they are undersleeping.
Both of these scenarios can harm physical/biological health and mental/psychological well-being.
One of the biggest reasons for the mess in life today is poor sleep management, which triggers many other issues.
This affects not only your physical health but also the quality of your work, home life, and even your connection with Allah (SWT).
Speaking of my personal experience, about 22 years ago, I used to sleep for 8 hours, sometimes even 9, with a completely erratic schedule.
After studying the Sleep Management framework and identifying my optimum sleep requirement, I realized I only needed 5.5 hours.
I was stunned!
That meant I was sleeping 2.5 hours more than I needed, affecting me slowly but surely.
Once I optimized my sleep, I gained an extra 2.5 hours each day.
This is 17.5 hours per week.
17.5 x 52 weeks = 910 hours annually.
Considering a typical 8-hour workday, that’s about 114 extra days per year.
114 x 21 years = 2,394 days.
2,394/360 = 6.65 years.
Sometimes, I couldn’t maintain this practice due to illness or other reasons. But still, I’ve gained an extra 5 to 5.5 years in the last 21 years.
Now, how have I utilized this extra time?
- Reading the Quran with translation and tafsir.
- Spending quality time with family.
- Reading an average of 20 books each year.
- Completing an average of 10 courses annually.
- Designing and managing multiple vision-oriented projects.
- A lot of writing
